The dancers who make up Nederlands Dans Theater 2 are fantastic. All under the age of 23 – that’s the qualification for being part of the company – they are strong, sleek and swift, light in their jumps, incredibly flexible on the turn or on the wing. They make everything look stunning.
The pity is that in this triple bill, unveiled at Sadler’s Wells on Wednesday, they are asked to do so little; or rather to do the same thing over and over again.
The opening work is choreographed by the veteran Jirí Kylián, formerly director of Nederlands Dans Theater, now its resident choreographer and still a master of the unexpected effect.
In Sleepless, a flexible panelled screen bisects the stage. The dancers hide behind it, revealing heads, hands and legs in improbable angles or force their way through it, their bodies vanishing bit by bit.
