La La La Human Steps

Background

La La La Human Steps was founded in 1980 around a four-week series of performances in Montreal and at the Kitchen in New York. Since then, the company has regularly toured the world and has become one of the world’s most recognized dance companies, due to the unique choreographic language it developed and has constantly reinvented since its inception.

Choreographic complexity, the alteration of balletic structures and the intertwining of choreographic, musical and cinematic strands are among the elements that create a sense of perceptual distortion and renewal, that encourage audiences to both reinvent and rediscover the body and its dance. As well, the company encourages its dancers to constantly redefine, question and renew themselves, in order bring out performances that range from the physical to the lyrical.

La La La Human Steps has collaborated with artists and institutions as varied as The Paris Opera and Frank Zappa.  The company celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005.

Amjad is a La La La Human Steps production in co-production with the National Arts Centre (Ottawa), deSingel International Art Center (Antwerp), Het Musiektheater (Amsterdam) and Theatre de la Ville (Paris).  Amjad also receives special support from ImPulsTanz (Vienna) and Société de la Place des Arts (Montréal).

La La La Human Steps would like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage and International Trade Canada.
